Trustee since 2019

I’ve served for six years on the Latah County Library Board and am running for re-election.

I love public libraries! They’re for everyone. I want people to find access to information they need as well as to books, music, and movies just for fun. I want people to find community in our seven branches.

We offer materials for all ages, from birth to old age. I support the rights of parents to choose what kinds of information their own kids access.

I'm proud of our library board’s careful stewardship of public money. We have a small budget for a library system of our size, but we are scrappy and work hard to spend tax money wisely. This year we purchased a new library building in Kendrick to replace a badly deteriorating facility, all without raising taxes.

The library board is non-partisan. As library trustees we’re not working toward any particular party’s platform. We want to be the meeting place for all of Latah County!

Continue Latah County’s proud tradition of strong libraries!

Trustee since 2023

Libraries are more than buildings filled with books; they are living, breathing centers of community learning, connection, and opportunity. During my tenure on the Latah County Library District Board of Trustees, I've worked diligently to ensure our seven branch libraries continue to evolve and serve our diverse rural communities. From youth and young adult programs to digital access initiatives and adult education resources, we are committed to meeting the unique needs of each community we serve.

My recent work has been particularly focused on strategic planning and community engagement. As a member of the board's planning committee, I've been instrumental in:

- Developing plans for the Kendrick library building acquisition

- Leading a comprehensive strategic planning process for the Latah County Library District

- Conducting extensive community surveys and focus groups across multiple towns across Latah County

With a master's degree in adult education and organizational development, combined with years of experience in rural community development as a small-scale vegetable farmer, small business owner and community development consultant, I bring a strategic, empathetic approach to library governance. I understand that libraries are not just repositories of knowledge, but dynamic spaces that can transform lives, bridge educational gaps, and strengthen community bonds.

I have been passionate about libraries most of my life, which is why I love serving on the LCLD Board of Trustees and why I am running for re-election.

Public libraries have been a common good for over 100 years.  We all contribute a little to them, and we all get to see ourselves reflected in them. Libraries can introduce us to challenging and fascinating new ideas and perspectives, and comfort us with familiar classics.  Our Latah County libraries make vital services like internet access available, lend a wide range of materials like maker kits and puzzles, hold programs for children and adults, provide materials and services to everyone from homeschooling families to homebound adults, and make space available for community group use.  They are some of the only free and non-commercial gathering spaces that are available to all.  Our libraries are vital to our healthy, vibrant communities, and they deserve to be supported and celebrated.

About me

I started volunteering in libraries when I was twelve, and became a librarian in 1998. Before that I studied natural resources management, and I also have a degree in creative writing (librarians can never pick just one subject…).  I have worked in both public and academic libraries—I am currently the humanities librarian at the University of Idaho—and I have to say I love public libraries best.  They are amazing!  It has been my honor to be part of the LCLD board for over ten years.  I am so proud of the work we have done and continue to do, from keeping services available during the COVID-19 pandemic to creating a great new library space in Kendrick. I’m also a devoted library user: Pinterest is great but there’s nothing like flipping through a gorgeous book of quilts or knitting patterns to get me inspired.
